LIVE | ‘BJP Murdering Democracy’: AAP & Congress Cry Foul Over Chandigarh Mayoral Polls

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal expressed worry over the cancellation of 8 votes, stating, "If these kinds of incidents happen in a Mayor election, the BJP can go to any extent in the Lok Sabha election."

AAP MP Raghav Chadha called for action against the Presiding Officer, asserting, "He should be arrested; he has done treason. We will file a complaint, demand not just an enquiry but his arrest."

Chadha emphasized the impact on democracy, stating, "It is a setback for India's democracy. We are aggrieved and hurt, worried about what will happen in the upcoming 2024 polls. If the BJP can resort to such low levels and commit forgery and illegality, they can go to any level to rig the election process."

In the mayoral election, BJP candidate Manoj Kumar Sonkar emerged victorious with 16 votes out of 36 total polled votes, including the ex-officio vote of Kirron Kher MP. The INDIA bloc candidate Kuldeep Singh secured 20 votes, but 8 votes were declared invalid, leading to protests and a planned approach to the Punjab and Haryana High Court by the AAP.
