Depending at the risk notion to the man or woman, the category is split into four stages: Z+ (highest degree), Z, Y and X. The SPG (Special Protection Group), NSG (National Security Guards), ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) are relied on with the obligation to shield our country’s VVIPs, VIPs, politicians, High- profile celebrities and sports individuals.

Z+ category has a security cover of 36 personnel( 10 Commandos + Police personnel) and NSG is used extensively to guard VVIP’s under this security cover. The commandos are equipped with sophisticated MP5 Sub-machine guns and modern communication gadgets and are trained in martial arts and combat fighting. Presently 17 people enjoy Z+ security cover in India including PM Narendra Modi, AP CM N Chandrababu Naidu, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, etc. SPG commandos are held responsible for security of the PM, former PMs and their immediate family members as part of the z+ category of security cover.

It has a security cover of 22 personnel and is provided by the Delhi police or the ITBF or CRPF personnel and one escort car.

Y Level security cover

Y Level security cover recently reduced from Z to Y

Security cover of 11 personnel (including 1 or 2 commandos) + (Police personnel) along with two personal security officers (PSOs).

X level security cover

X level security cover

It includes security cover of 2 personnel along with 1  personal security officer.

After the Uri attack, in the fear of terrorist strike, security audit has been reviewed for each category especially Z+ and Z category. But does this level of security promise victory of life over death? There have been instances of lapses in security. Rajbir Singh, a famous encounter specialist was provided Z-level security, but was killed in March 2008. Former Union Minister Pramod Mahajan was killed by his brother; former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was killed by a member of her own security detail; and Rajiv Gandhi's assassination is a story we still haven't forgotten.
